Our Detailed Refits

As per manufacturers guidelines, RSB Rigging conducts detailed refits and maintenance programs to ensure the safety, compliance, and performance of your yacht’s rigging and spars. These schedule refit periods include un-stepping and re-stepping of masts, visual and NDT inspections, re-heading of rods or composite cable inspections, replacement of parts, rig tuning, sign off and detailed reports once the project is complete.

With a complete refit and precise reporting, we ensure your rigging system meets both manufacturers’ guidelines and Class or Flag State standards.

Mast Unstepping, Inspection, and Re-Heading

5-Year Refit

The 5-year refit is a thorough process that involves key maintenance to ensure the safety and performance of your yachts spars, rigging, and hardware. The refit begins with mast unstepping  preparation and a comprehensive visual inspection. During this stage, measurements are taken of important settings, including spreader angles, pre-bend, turnbuckle, and furler settings, to document the current rig setup.

ROD RIGGING

Once the mast is unstepped and the rig is undressed, we proceed with re-heading the fore and aft stays and diagonal rods according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. It is advised at this time that all Aramid cables are replaced to ensure continued rigging reliability.

COMPOSITE RIGGING

Once the mast is unstepped and the rig is undressed, and according to OEM guidelines, a full visual inspection of the composite standing rigging will be completed by the manufacturers technicians. At this time, the metal hardware interfacing the composite cables with the mast will be replaced with new parts.

All sheaves and pins are thoroughly cleaned, after which non-destructive testing (NDT) is performed to check for cracks and unseen flaws that may compromise the rig’s integrity. A full visual inspection of the spars will be completed to check for cracks or structural damage that may require further NDT inspection or repair. Once all the necessary refit and service work is finalised, the mast is redressed and re-stepped, before the tuning process is completed.

Finally, the rig log is updated with details of all work carried out, and a copy is sent to both the boat and the mast manufacturer, if necessary.

MAST UNSTEPPING, INSPECTION, AND RE-HEADING

10-Year Refit

The 10-year refit is a more comprehensive and detailed version of the 5-year, designed to ensure the long-term integrity and performance of your yacht’s rigging. Like the 5-year refit, it includes mast unstepping , detailed visual inspections, non-destructive testing (NDT), and rig log updates.

For vessels with rod rigging, all rods are re-headed or replaced, and all Aramid cables will be replaced at this time.

For vessels with composite rigging, the cables will either be shipped back to the manufacturer for detailed testing and inspection, or a thorough on-site visual inspection will be completed by the manufacturer’s representative.

As per the 5-year refit, all sheaves, pins and hardware are thoroughly cleaned for non-destructive testing.

Ensuring Manufacturer and Regulatory Standards are met

Detailed Reporting and Compliance

Both 5-year and 10-year refits come with detailed reports documenting the condition of the rig and rigging, all work carried out, and any recommendations for future maintenance.

These reports are vital for maintaining compliance with both manufacturer guidelines and regulatory bodies, ensuring that your yacht is always in top condition.

Record-Keeping for Future Maintenance

Rig Log Updates

As part of both the 5-year and 10-year refits, we update the rig log with all the work performed. A copy of the report and updated rig log will be provided to the boat’s crew and, where necessary, sent to the mast manufacturer. This ensures that all future maintenance is properly tracked and that the yacht’s rigging remains compliant with all safety standards.
